Lead by Brandon Childs and featuring JJ Miller, David Darling and Dylan Hoff, the coaches demonstrated a variety of shooting styles by both left hand dominant and right hand dominant players, and explained how these styles developed and why they are so effective. While accuracy over speed was emphasized, the campers appeared most impressed with David Darling's incredibly fast shot. Hopefully they picked up some pointers for the "Fastest Shot" competition!

After the demonstration, they divided into groups and rotated through six different stations. He brought the latest and greatest products from STX, some of which are not yet on the market. Needless to say, the campers enjoyed having the opportunity to heard about the gear and handle the different items. The flexible graphite shaft brought the loudest cries of amazement from the group, as the campers eagerly began compiling their wish lists!

While all of the campers received a lanyard and sticker, they will have the opportunity tomorrow to compete in the "Fastest Shot" competition for either a blue or white STX Superpower head. As the camp has grown, Coach Hemming has worked hard to continue to attract quality coaches and to have enough coaches present so each camper receives valuable individual instruction. Our camper to coach ratio this year is 7:1, and our coaching staff is composed of Woodberry Forest Lacrosse Coaches, college coaches and college players.

Day 2 First Session

Taking advantage of the somewhat cooler temperatures, the coaches and campers took to the turf for a productive morning session. Once again, the campers were divided into conferences based on their age. The Centennial Conference engaged in 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2 and 4 vs. 4 drills and were provided with specific coaching based on their position; attackmen went against defensemen and midfielders went against each other. The goalies received their own instruction and, once they were adequately warmed up, were added to the drills to see shots from their fellow campers. Following a water break, the campers were divided into two teams and given time to prepare for the games that will start this evening after dinner.

The ODAC conference was busy down on the lower turf field. They started their morning with stick skills; focusing on throwing and catching, use of their off hand, and use of one hand in order to build wrist strength and develop better accuracy. The campers held a half field shoot-out competition and took a water break before starting a game of Hungry, Hungry Hippo. This, much like the board game, is a competitive ground ball pick up game where four teams compete to see which can gather the most balls. When the whistle blew, the campers did not hesitate to get after the balls and do what was necessary to prevent others from doing so!

The morning session was followed by some time in the Barbee Center. The campers were given the opportunity to get a snack and drinks before cooling off in the pool or playing a game of knockout. Some campers did a wall ball workout with coaches, others took shots on goal, while some just enjoyed being in the air conditioning!

This afternoon's session will be held in the Barbee Center due to the heat.

Day 1 Second Session

The slightly cooler evening temperatures and setting sun found the campers and coaches outside for the evening session. The campers were divided up into two conferences based on their age. The younger campers were placed in the ODAC Conference, while the older campers were identified as the Centennial Conference.

The Centennial Conference was further divided into two groups based on position. Goalies and defensemen worked on clearing. The attack and midfield players focused on dodging and shooting. At the end of the session, all of the positions came together and worked on numbers situations (3 vs. 2 and 4 vs. 3).

The ODAC Conference spent more time on the fundamentals, such with pair man passing, and ground balls. Janet Lewis, the Director of Summer Programs, and her assistant, Sarah Coleman, ensure that everything is in place for the start of camp and that it runs without a hitch. Tammy Firman, RN and Jeff Johnson, Athletic Trainer, keep a close eye on the campers so they stay healthy and continue to have fun. Greg Guldin keeps the pool open during camp, providing plenty of opportunities for the campers to take a break from the sun and stay cool. Tracey Nibblins makes sure all of the gear is in order, Mark May takes care of the fields and all that goes along with having the goals and nets in place and the Barbee Staff keeps the facility up and running so the campers can play lacrosse out of the sun. For all others behind the scenes, thank you so much for all of your hard work and everything you do to make this camp a positive experience for the campers. We have over 100 campers here this year from across the United States and a strong coaching staff of 15 to ensure they have a great time. The morning began with the campers and their families checking in at the Barbee Center, after which they made their way up the hill to the Dowd-Finch Dormitory to move into their rooms. Once everyone was settled, Coach Hemming gathered the entire camp on the lawn to introduce himself and the coaches, review some of the basic rules of life at Woodberry and discuss their plan for the day. With the heat advisory in effect, the campers will be staying indoors for their skill session rather than hitting the field.

Camp begins today!

Check the blog frequently during the camp session for photos and updates on our various activities. As it states on the right hand side of the blog, all of the coaches are either Woodberry Forest, other high school or college level coaches, all of whom played at the college level. We have representatives from both the D1 and D3 college level, many of whom are All Americans. Some of them are relatively new to coaching and others have been playing and coaching for over twenty years. Not only does this camp offer quality instruction, but boasting a coaching staff of twelve, is able to maintain an outstanding camper to coach ratio. The campers hit the turf at 8:45AM and took full advantage of the cooler morning temperatures. The Centennial Conference focused on dodging drills prior to the morning break. The low camper to coach ratio ensured that the players received constant instruction and immediate feedback on their skill demonstrations. After the morning break, the players took part in a one on one drill from different points on the field. They put what they learned about dodging into practice in an attempt to score. Following that, they worked on shooting and competed to see who had the fastest shot (with the assistance of a radar gun).

I found the ODAC Conference starting their day with shooting drills, followed by a competition for the fastest shot. With over 70 campers this year, the staff was busy checking everyone in and making sure they were situated both down at the Barbee Center and up the hill in their dorm rooms. Campers and their parents toted in their necessities for the week. The day promised to be a hot one and many of the campers were excited to find out that the dorm is air conditioned! Families said "good bye" for a few days and the campers settled down on the lawn for some introductory remarks from Coach Brian Hemming.

Coach Hemming welcomed the campers to Woodberry Forest School, stating how excited he and all the other coaches were for the camp to begin. He laid out some of the basic expectations and rules of the camp and those of the school. His remarks were followed by the athletic trainer, Jeff Johnson, who explained the importance of sunscreen, hydration and Gold Bond to the campers. The forecast for next few days is showing high temperatures and many precautions are being taken to ensure that the campers have a great and safe experience.

Lacrosse Camp 2010

Lacrosse Camp for the summer of 2010 has begun! The campers and their families arrived at Woodberry excited for the start of camp and thankful for the cool weather! We have over 60 campers this year, with a fairly even split between the ten to twelve year old age group and the thirteen to sixteen year old age group. The campers this year come from 11 different states, all eager to improve their lacrosse skills.

Thanks to Janet Lewis, Woodberry's Director of Summer Programs, Sara Coleman, Office Assistant, and Tammy Firman, our school nurse, check in went very smoothly.
